No. 827 is the portrait of an American statesman. See beer on his breath. How fond he is of cloves. He is a man of genius. He fears to wear a collar for fear of offending the tramps. He fears to go without one for fear of offending the gentility; So he compromises, and wears the same collar three weekjs. The tobacco stains on his shirt front lie put there him-
self. The black eye he got the last time he called a Mississippi statesman to order. He is just in the act of telling a rural constituent that when he goes to Washington he rooms with the President, and that the President calls him " Bill, my boy," and he always addresses the Presi-dent-as "Skinny." It is a lie; not a very good one, but it will do.
No. 963 is a painting of Richard 111. He-was not a good man, but he was very decided in his views and positive in his sentiments. He was an eminent vocalist, and, on one occasion, he refused to respond to an encore, shouting at the audience " Too hoarse, too hoarse ! " This remark has passed into history, although it is difficult to see what there is in it so very wonderful.
No. 11,805 is a battle scene, taken from the war between England and Russia. This is the English army, here is London, smashing windows and shouting " Hon to St. Petersburg." These are the Russians, eating tallow candles and shouting " Brwxtcnktzpblphknstky forever." The ammunition-traini! are seen in the distance, bringing up supplies of ink. The Russian General is seen at the head of his army. Ele is asleep. 'The English General cannot be seen.. He is off drawing his pay. The war is very expensive. Some of the soldiers get as high as four dollars a colunin, narrow measure, brevier leaded. Nobody has been killed in this battle yet. They haven't had time to fight long enough. It is awful. Let us draw a veil.
