CHRISTCHURCH.

Friday. The scene at the declaration of the poll last night was one of indescribable confusion. The mob howled at the Returning Officer, who could not be heard. When Mr Gapes, who polled 1,300 votes, got on the fence to return thanks, 'some ruffians threw a mess of flour in his eyes, nearly blinding him, and knocking him off the fence. Wilson, the second highest on the poll, was carried over to the hotel by the mob amid cries of " Cabbage for ever." There is great feeling at this election, and Councillors Badcliff, Jameson, Euddenclau, Prairu, and Bickerton have resigned, rather than sit at the same table. It is also said that Gapes and Ayres will resign, but it is doubtful. There will probably be "a municipal quarrel such as was never before known here. The result is looked forward to with ipterest. Coming candidates are already mentioned, such as " Murphy, the bill discounter;'" " Peter, the fish hawker;" " Jack Lee "(a stump orator who never gets a hearing); and Brian, known as the " Long Sweep." The names of other equally influential citizens are mentioned as likely to contest the election. Civic matters here have never before been in .such contempt. ;
