Theatre Royal.

Mr Chaplin appeared last night ia two comedies, " The Serious Family" and "Perfection." In the former he played Captain Murphy Maguire, not in the boisterous, rollicking fashion which some exponents of the character do it, but in a quiet, gentlemanly.'. way, without any extravagancies of manner or brogue. He was well supported, Mrs" Walter Hill playing charreingly as Mrs Ormsby Delamajne; and Mr Musgrave enacting

the part of Aminadub Sleek in admirable style. Miss Jessie 'Raymond was fairly successful as Lady iSowerby Creamly, while Miss .Morgan sustained the-part of Mrs Charles Torrens evenly and well; the minor parts w<>ve creditably filled. "Perfection " is a trifle of an entertaining character, and the few parts in it are all good ones. Charles Paragon was played by Mr Chaplin capitally, Mr Musgrave was again thoroughly at -home in the role of Sir Laurence Paragon Miss Lizzie Morgan was natural, and therefore pleasing, as Kate O'Brien, while her song, rendered previously popular here, " Whip Poor Will," fairly brought down the house, and the singer had to repeat it. There were some amusing passages between Sam (Mr Emmet) and Susan (Miss Lily May), a gentleman's gentleman and a lady's maid. Mr Emmet hi.s shown himself to be possessed of merit as a comedian, .and Miss May gives promise of a successful future. In " Perfection "they were well suited, and they played so as, to secure the approbation. of the" audience. Both pieces went smoothly, and were unmis- ! takably enjoyed by the audience, wh^o* frequently applauded. To-night, it will be noticed, the fine play of " Eichelieu," by the late LordLytton, will be produced, .with Mr Chaplin in the iole of the Cardinal. It is a grand piece, and we feel sure that Mr Chaplin will give an able impersonation of the ambitious churchman and statesman. :
