It is perhaps unnecessary to inform read.ers that the Borough general election takes place to-morrow, as we. know that some candidates have been so assiduous in their attentions of late that, every one possessing a vote must have often been reminded of it, and of the, fact that on Thursday the 12th he would be able to exercise the privilege which such profession confers. This is the second general election of . councillors — the other being the first election after-the incorporation .of the Borough. On that occasion no less than thirty-three candidates were nominated (some of whom are again to the fore), and twenty-eight went to the poll. The highest number polled was 326 for Mr Eenshaw, who headed the poll; ;and the lowest number that returned a candidate'was 153, the present Mayor being the recipient of that amount of support. Of the defeated candidates, the highest had 136 votes and the lowest 13. At the present time we have 15 candidates seeking the rotes of burgesses, divided amongst three wards,^ and if any candidate can count upon as many votes as returned the lowest on the poll at the first election, that candidate will, we believe, be returned. There is every probability' that to-morrow's polling will infuse considerable new blood into the Council. In fact it is certain, for if all the old members whp offer themselves for re-election be returned there will b9 seats for four new members. The contest so far has been a remarkably quiet affair, and exceptionally free from personalities, but perhaps to-morrow candidates may wake up a bit and resort to printer's ink to further their cause. The polling will commence at nine in • the morning and close at six in the evening.
