Sib, —I hare been a: subscriber to!the aboTe Institute for the last four yean, and I am a subscriber now; and , .. continue one while the Scotsman is taken The bulk of the.inhabitants of this district are composed of English, Irish' and Scotch, and of course in a public institution some papers from England, Ireland, and Scotland ought to *be found; and in every; institute. that I. have:seen.in New Zealand or the Australian colonies 1 such was always the, case;, but I am sorry that I must make'one'exception, that is the Thames Institute, from which the Irish newspapers hare recently been all excluded, for what reason I cannot even ■ imagine, as «good many of tHe Subscribers are, ..Irishmen,, and Irishmen contribute Wl assist like everyone else to the concerts, &c, so often got up for the support of the Institute. As a fairminded Scotchman I, must express my entire disapproval of the late act, iof the .' Mechanics' Committee, and I can only say that I hare, not seen, in any other 'Committee south of the equator anything so narrow-minded and illiberal, or so very ill-suited to the welfare or character of a literary institute as. the late act of our own committee.
