Oke of the candidates for. the representation of the . Middle Ward in the Borough Council —Mr G. N. Brassey —■ intimates to the: electors by advertisement his sentiments on one very important point, namely, the gold duty. Mr Brassey is of opinion that now the gold duty has become a source of local revenue it should be retained, as it is easily collected and of considerable importance to .the Borough. Mr Brassey also denies the report spread by some " charming ". electioneering agent that he is a follower of the present Mayor and one of,-the nominees of .the Town Clerk. Mr Brassey distinctly states that he is going in on a thoroughly independent ticket.

The following recognition of the services, so promptly' ren ered by the crew of the Naval Brigade on Friday last, when it was reported 1 that the s.s. PYarl had foundered, we have pleasure in giving publicity to. Although, happily, the services of the crew were not actually required, the promptitude displayed by the officer and men in going off on this, rs well as . many other occasions is deserving of all praise:— "Thames, September 2, 1878.—Captain Wildman, T.N.B.~Sir,—On my return from Piako I heard of the promptitude displayed by Lieutenant Bennett and some members of the Thames Naval Brigade in getting out the gun boat wben it was rumored in iShortland on Friday morning that the s.s. Pearl had foundered. ' I am happy to be. able to state that, although there was a heavy sea running while the gale was on, I never had the least .fe-r of any accident, as I knew the sea-going capabilities of the boat, and had full confidence in Captain Bettis, who was in charge. At the same time I beg to thank 'sincerely • Lieutenant Bennett and his comrades for the kindly feeling which they. • showed on that occasion.' I wish to recognise the humane spirit which actuated them, and which led them io brare the storm short handed to succour the distressed, rather than lose precious moments in getting a full crew together. I therefore enclose the sum. of £5, which I will thank you to dispose of aa you may think fit. I only wish that I could do more to express my gratitude to those gentlemen. Looking at the past services rendered by the brigade, whose motto might justly be " Ever ready," I think the Government should be urged to spare no expense in providing them with every requisite to enable them to act efficiently as coast guards. I tiave the honour to remain; sir, your most obedient servant, F. Snowling, Engineer s.s. Pearl."

The following table—extracted from the .Registrar General's Report on the vital statistics of the Boroughs of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hokitika for the month of July—gives the population, number of births and deaths,- and proportion of deaths to the 1000 of population of each borough:—•

To a correspondent:—-Cock-eye : No you booby, the words " Semper Paratus " chalked up outside the door of the Provincial Hotel to-day is not the Latin for " Cock a-doodle doo. " I.t means " Always ready," and is doubtless just a little cheap advertising by the proprietor.
