THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1878.

The public meeting last night was in one sense a fiasco : that is, it resulted disastrously for the arch schemer from whose fertile brain the project emanated. For ourselves we are glad that the people were not deluded into compromising themselves by an expression of opinion in -favor of ,such;a.visicnary;|cheniei In one respect everybody was disappointed, in that no ;qne seemed to.have any more information, regarding the—East Coast trunk line" than the wire; puller who drafted the requisition and subsequently the disconnected and incomprehensible resolution. No harm ; has been done, however,' but , good. After , last night's .fiasco, burgesses will be more, careful in writing their names to requisitions, and, we trust, satisfy themselves of the contents of all documents before appending their signatures. *If we know the temper of Thames citizens, they are as little inclined to be led by the nose by one or two manoeuvring officials, as .the' people of the Colony it large are to be governed by an array of under secretaries and 1 civil servants; and some of the former may yet find this out in a way not pleasant to themselves. The Public Works Statement is expected to be delivered to-night. We have been led to expect the Government will favorably consider the Thames and Waikato Sail way construction. If, unfortunately, we should find that we have for the past few weeks been living in a fool's paradise—that the Government are inclined to shelve; our railway scheme, that must be the signal for a profound, united, and powerful remonstrance; as unanimous as that of the meeting last night which rejected the East Coast trunk line proposal, and as strong as a community like the Thames can make it by exerting every nerve and sinew in a constitutional demand for their rights. -';■;"
