. This day. . John Gleeson was drowned at Dunedin' jetty yesterday while attempting, when in a state of intoxication, to cross to the vessel to which he belonged. Arrangements are to, be made for holding a grand annual musical competition in Dunedin.
Thanksgiving services for the preservation of peace were held in all the Dunedin Anglican churchei yesterday. Saturday. A sharp shook of earthquake was felt at 2.45 this afternoon. - Brick buildings shook, furniture vibrated, and some people rushed out of their houses in alarm.
The Northern-visitors will be entertained at a banquet at Dunedin, on Saturday, the ,sth of September.
Mrs Eeid, of Saddle Hill, was Bned £50 to-day for sly grog-selling.
An inquest was held on Mrs Cowan to-day. The jury returned a verdict that death was due to disease and to a wound inflicted by herself while in a state of temporary insanity.
