THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 1878.

We offer no opposition to- the meeting to be held on Monday night; a little wholesome agitation will show our representatives in Parliament that we are still alive to any matter affecting our own interests. It seems, however,,that the object of the meeting is rather vaguely set forth. It must be remembered that the intentions of the Government regarding any such work as a " Thames and East Coast Bailway " are but matters of rumour, and it is not probable that anything definite will be known until the Public Works Statement is delivered. Moreover, reference has been made in the rumours "to a "trunk line," without any indication as to where such line is to commence or where it shall end. If it should turn out that the Government propose to continue the present Waikato line until it touches the East Coast, it will scarcely be brought to us here; and it will be well to consider whether this community should express an opinion in ponnection with any substitute for the Thames Valley line until we have definite information as to the nature of that substitute.. For this reason, and many others that might be adduced, we think it would be advisable to wait and see what ;the Government proposals in the Public Works Statement really are before pronouncing in favor of any scheme "in lieu of the guarantee under the Districts Bailways Act." ;
