THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 1878.

Fbom a telegram received from the Premier yesterday it appears likely that legislation will be necessary to authorise the Karaka Tunnel scheme to be undertaken. Mr Andrew Otto, who has interested himself in this matter ever since it was first mooted, being himself one of the projectors; wired down to know what was the reason of the delay, and stating that the miners were anxious, mining dull, and work scarce. In reply Sir George Grey telegraphed as follows, yesterday : " The matter is being pushed on as rapidly as it can be, but legislation may possibly be required." The C'oromandel Tunnel Company was an undertaking similar to the proposed Karaka scheme, and in the former case legislation was required. It is to be hoped that the Karaka Tunnel will not be delayed for want of the necessary legislation till after next session, as in the present depressed state of mining we believe it would afford scope for a considerable amount of skilled labor, and, as the promoters are sanguine that good payable reefs would be intersected, the gold yield would be increased, and a large amount of good—immediate and prospective —be done. If the Karaka Tunnel were commenced and met with a moderate amount of success, it would lead to similar undertakings in other parta of the district. In fact, in view of legislation, it might be advisable to provide for future schemes in any bill to be introduced to the House.
