Testimonial to J.E. Macdonald, Esq.
In response to an invitation from Mr Warden Fraser a large number of gentlemen assembled in the dining room of the Governor Bowen Hotel last night to coacert measures for.gel.ing up a.testimonial to Mr J..-E. Macdonaldon his leaving the district. Captain Fraier took the chair» and there were present over sixty gentlemen, amongst whom we recognised the following:—Eev. Y. Lash, Messrs A. J # Allom,E. W. Gibbons, L. Ehreufried, U. McDonald Scott, W. Davie.% A. Aitkeu, T. Spencer, A. Lruco/ A. Butler, W. Mahoney, M. Hennelly, J. Bcnney, F. A.-Pulleine, J. McGowan, J. Leydon, G. O'Halloran, E. N. The CbaLaian rend 1 the requisition to himself and the advertisement calling the meeting, and referred to the large attendance ns proof of the estimation in which Mr Mucdonald was held by the Thames ueople. Mr D. R, Gellion was appointed to act as Secretary, and Mr T. L. Murray Treasurer. Alter some conversation regarding the object of the meeting and tie form the testimonial should take, Mr Jas. Maekay pioposcd, Mr George Black j scco'iilei 1, aud it was unanimously carried "That a committee be appointed to I collect subscriptions, snd that a subcommittee be appointed to draft an pddress." It was then resolved that the committee" consist of twenty members, and the following were proposed and accepted by the meeting :—Messrs W. Davies, L, Ehrenfricd, J. Frater, E. W. PucVey, J. Mackay, J. Brown, 11. Comer, T. Spenier, E. T. Wildman, A. J. Allom, G. N. Braasey, J. D. Wickham, J. W. Walker, W. Mahoney, E. B. Cameron, W; Carrick, A. Price. E. W. Hollis, W. H. Taipari, Lieut. Baika, and Major Murray. The following were appointed a sub-committee to prepare an address and arrange for the presentation :—Captain Fracer.-chairman ; Messrs B. Workman, L. Ehrenfried, E. W. Puckey, E, B. Cameron, and J. Mackay. The Chairman said he would like to take the sense of the meeting us to what the presentation should be. He was averse to a dinner, and would suggest an illuminated address, accompanied by a piece of plate, and to have the same publicly presented afc the Theatre Boyal or some other place, without drinking or anything of that sort. The meeting expressed its concurrence in the views of the Chairman. It was then suggested by the Chairman, in order to givo practical effect to the proceedings, to open lists at once, and the committee were invited to set an example. This they did in excellent style, the sum of their subscriptions amounting to £57 19s. Other gentlemen present then appended their naruos to lists, and augmented the previously named sum by about £40, so that a total of nearly £100 was raised in the room. During the meeting Mr James Mackay said that he was sure a number of the Natives would like to participate in tno movement, and it was on his suggestion that (he names of Messrs Taipariaad liaika were placed on the Committee. The meeting closed fl ith a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
