THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1878.

The Secretary to the Harbor Board, who is also Town Clerk, told a story at a meeting of the Harbor Board the other day, in which it was related that a parliamentary whip had been sent by the leaders of his party to the hon. member on the floor of the house with instructions to tell " that —~— drunken fool to lit down," as he was talking exactly contrary to what he had been told to do. As this anecdote was related between the different items of business, and c:.me juat afterVsome uncomplinaentavy remr.rks from the Mayor

and other members of the Board as to the unfitiicss of Mr William fiowe, M.H.R., to look after the interests of the Harbor Board at Wellington during the session, our reporier embodied the story in his report. The paper containing the report having reached Mr Eowe, we are not surprised that he took the Town Clerk's little pleasantry as referring to himself, or that he immediately denied the truthfulness of the story, even at the risk of being accused of having fitted the cap to his ovrn head. Anyhow, Mr Eowe forwarded a telegram to Mr Dean, and one of this tenour to us :

"Apply to Dean for copy of telegram gent him and publish as advertisement prominently twice.—W. Rowb." We applied to Mr Dean, and were informed that he had rot received any commuTjication. At a later period of the day, however, th 3 following was sent to us by Mr Dean: " Government Buildings, " Wellington, Aug. 1, 1878.

" If the remarks made by the Mrcretary to the Harbor Board which appear in the Thames Evening Star of the 2nd instant are intended "to apply to me (and I believe so) they are wickedly and absolutely untrue. "(Signed) W. Kowe." Here we supposed the matter would end ; a statement having been made which reflected disgracefully by .implication on Mr Eowe, pud he having denied its veracity, we concluded that except between the principals there was an end of the matter; but to-day we received a further telegram from Mr Eowe, who has, we presume, by this time been advised of the contents of what was published as " a copy" of his message to Mr Dean. It reads thus:

" Government Buildings, " Wellington, 11.30 a.m. "August 13, 1878. "Whole of telegram not published. Kemarks made cowardly and untrue. I will reply by letter. " W. Eowe." From this we gather that Mr Dean has suppressed a portion of the telegram sent by Mr Eowe to him—although requested to furnish a copy for publication to vindicate the character of a man whom he bad aspersed in his absence. As JM.r Eowe's letter will probably throw some additional light on this nasty business, we will say no more at present than to suggest that the Borough Council Chambers seem to have been the scene of more than one job lately that will scarcely bear honest scrutiny. ;
