Mr Deveux has been sworn in Governor.
lieutenant Commander Moore of the Alacrity has been fined £20 for breach of the Quarantine Regulations. A Chinaman has been fined one hundred pounds for smuggling opium. There is great dissatisfaction re Crowa Grants.
A party of native officers sent by Eata Eskeli Bako, of that province, to capture an offender, committed a great outrage. They confined all the male inhabitants of a village in one hovel, and the females in another, and, subjected the latter, despite their cries and struggles, to an indiscriminate violation. On intelligence reaching the European officer at Namena, he ordered the arrest of the offenders, and forty were punished. A German at the Line Islands has been murdered by natives.
„ News from Soloman Islands shows it was not Wright who was killed, but a man named Townsend. A boy employed by him wss also seriously speared.
