THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1878.
Our contemporary seems to be undecided as to which of the two is the most competent- the County ; Chairman or the Mayor—to be entrusted with the work of " lobbying " the Thames Valley Eaiiway. Yesterday he wrote : "We may express our regret that the County Chairmen was not appointed Chairman 'of the Eailway Committee instead of His Worship the Mayor, because we have greater confidence' in Mr Brodie's lobbying. capabilities, and should feel that the Bill was safe in his hands." To-day the editor seems to have altered bis opinion (perhaps through the potent influence of the, intriguing Town Clerk), and expresses himself tbus : "If it is thought wiser to entrust these matters to His Worship the Mayor rather than to any'other agent, solicitor, or delegate, then let His Worship be chosen, irrespective of any other considerations." Why this halting between two opinions ? Does our contemporary imagine that the influence of the Mayor would be greater than that of the Premier and our other member in the House and Mr Btodie's outside? It really would seem that he thinks so, and that the fate of the Eailway Bill this session depends upon sending His Worship the Mayor to Wellington. We are inclined to agree with our contemporary's opinion as expressed in yesterday's aricle, that the County Chairman has " greater lobbying capabilities" than the Mayor, and we can feel that the " Bill is safe in his hands." Moreover, after what the Mayor said at the meeting of Council on Thursday evening last, that " he was not going to Wellington od his own business, and if he went at all it would be with the greatest reluctance," it seems positively cruel on the part of our contemporary to urge His Worship to such a sacrifice of inclination to duty. If we must have a special agent or delegate to assist our members and the County Chairman, why not send the Town Clerk, who, as author of the Bailway Bill, would assuredly ■watch its progress with parental solicitude.
