The case of Frederick Whitlock and Thomas McDonough, charged together with having had an illicit still in their possession, occupied the Court all day. The evidence of the Collector of Customs (David Lundon) shewed that, while making a tour of inspection, his suspicions were aroused, and made an investigation* Ambrose Lough and partner, *j McDonough, upsetting a vessel of grog, a still and worm (partially hidden by sacks) were discovered. Upwgrds of 20 gallons of spirits were in the room. The still was working at the time. Fined £250, with the option of twelve months' imprisonment inflicted in each case. Ambrose Lough, caught in an upper room, was tried separately. In defence the servant, McDonough, said he knew: nothing of the unlawful proceedings. He was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment without the option of a fine. The defendant Lough states that the still was used for the first time when caught. The affair caused much excitement, it being the first case of the sort which has occurred in the town. The defendants' solicitors has given notice of appeal.
