THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 1878

A perusal of the report of the Bo« rough Council proceedings last night wi\\ convince any impartial individual thai there was an intention to perpetrate a surprise on some councillors and put an indignity upon Mr Wm.Eowe, M.H.R., in the matter of appointing some one to look after the Borough's interests at Wellington during the session, and ratepayers may congratulate themselves that there was at the Council meeting a party strong enough to upset the schemes of the Town Clerk and his fellow conspirators. The incident in connection with Mr Power's appointment to represent this Borough at the Municipal Conference shows how very necessary it is for councillors to look closely after matters if they do not wish their opinions and. the burgesses' interests to be treated with contempt. We have not the slightest doubt that Mr Power's inspiration regarding amendments in the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, emanated from the same saurce as his appointment. The Town Clerk wants to see Thames a model township, and his par tiality for tinkering at Acts of Parliament has long been regarded as a pardonable weakness. We a.c glad to have contributed in some degree to spoiling the intended little game re the appointment of a paid delegate. It is to be hoped the result will tend to keep Borough officers within the bounds of authority.
