TAIRUA GOLDFIELD.

(from a cobbespoudent.)

Nevesvilie, July 29, 1878.

This place at present is very dull indeed/ the ITevesville Township being almost abandoned, one solitary store being the j only place occupied in this once thriving ] township, and this must be kept open at considerable pecuniary loss to the proprietor, Mr Say, of Puriri. The lower township Jacksonville with its one store (Clotworthy's) seems to monopolise what little business there is to be done. The j deputy mining inspector, Mr Ivey, paid us a visit last week and posted notices of forfeiture on several expired leases which will at once encourage prospecting, and will no doubt, effect a change for the "better. V , , The late Golden Arrow Battery still remains iii -statu quo. It is a. shame to allow this [fine plant to lay idle and so much pay able-crushing dirt within easy transit. T^^tramway is also going to ruiri> trees Tailing on it in all directions, doing mucli damage; and a large amount of money will have to be expended before it can be again placed in thorough working order. ... , , . The Alma mine is the only one working on this side of the Pakirarahi. The tributers, Carnie and party, are pushing forward work in a manner that does them credit, and deserves substantial remuneration. The mine is being thoroughly prospected, and "well secured, and the result ©f this month's operations tends fair to be payable. , Tbe Phoenix Company a battery is now in full working order, and crushing will commence to day, permanently. The discreditable manner in which the contractor for the erection of above battery and tramway carried out his work must have left any amount of difficulties for the newly appointed manager, Mr 0. Comes, to contend with before commencing operations. They have a splendid body of stone to work upon, and according to dish prospects it should shape well at the battery.
