An Elopement Frustrated.

iAn incident, which does not reflect at all creditably on the principals, was brought under notice yesterday. There' is a " gentlemau " visiting our town at present, and his attention was attracted to a young girl residing at a hotel in Shortland. Tliis travelling gay Lothario, who is said to be a married man, procured an introduction to the girl some two or three days ago, and amused her with wonderful stories of bis travels, interspersed with tales of daring in which he had been the hero. Gradually the silly girl began to take a liking to Lothario — perhaps for the dangers he had gone through. (It must have been for that, as he is not good looking, and has. at least passed 40 winters). Well, on Wednesday night with some of his myrmidoms he was closeted with the silly moth of a girl for some hours, and the old, old story was told into her willing ear. He promised to marry her, and it was arranged that she should elope with him in the small hours of the morning. All went on swimmingly. Lothario and his brave associates having apparently taken themselves off, at about two yesterday morning, a servant at the hotel, who had" not retired, observed a tall youth prowling about the back yard, whistling softly. His business was asked, and he replied, "Is Miss C—— ready yet ? I have come to take her to — " (giving Lothario's true name). " It's all right, at Grahamstown." The servant returned to the house and found MiBS C—— S the wouldbe dupe, all dressed, and with her luggage coming down: the passage. The servant spoke to the owner of the house, and he with some lodgers had the girl stopped, and then started in pursuit of the tall youth outside. They chased him about a quarter of a mile, but his length of limb saved him. Our informant, who was one of the pursuers, says, "By Jupiter! if we had caught him we'd have dipped him in the ——," well we wont say what. The gallant gay Lothario had better make himself scarce, as he has made himself amenable t© the law, which may be set in motion.
