The following letter was received today, in pursuance of which a committee of the Bcrough Council decided that for the present. Mr John Brooks Mason, Health Officer for the Borough, should be the person to whom applications for relief shall be made, at his office, Borough Council Chambers, upstairs :—" Princes street, Auckland. — His Worship the Mayor of Thames Borough Council.— Sib,—ln anticipation of the change contemplated by the Government in the mode of distributing public relief, I have the honor to furnish you with a list of the persons now in receipt of relief at the Thames; and, pending the completion of the above change, I respectfully request that in future all applications may be made through the Borough Council, it beiDg the local body upon the spot would be better able to detect imposition and know the deserving better than a relieving officer at a distance, and at the mercy of any and every person who may apply for relief. — I have, &c, J.
