THE GOOD SAMARIT.
(To the Editor of tho Evenikq-Y'tab.) Sib,—What an immaculate a^e yro live in in this Thames community. lam credibly informed that an aged pedler, one Mowbray Meggett by name, _ died denly the other day, and having been accustomed to "indulge" occasionally in drops of supposed comfort—and, of course, was supposed to be afflicted with the.sin of poverty also—no rev. gentleman could be found to read the service, and no followers to' attend his place of rest "but one," and that of a different denomination—a strong and powerful Cornish miner—who, on hearing of the circumstances, at once undertook the task, even if he had to carry him on his back. However, fortunately, a little assistance was obtained on the way, and I have no doubt Mr J. James read the service over one whom I believe never wronged anyone but himself. Now, sir, supposing Kothschild had committed the same sin of indulgence, and ended his life, what a rush there would have been of all denominations, reverend and otherwise—not that it makes but very little difference; it is only the look of it. And if it had been known that the aforesaid Meggett had money in the bank, it would have made a great difference. Wo are a very religious community, every one seems trying to look upwards, but only one man could be found to take a poor sinner to tho grave.—l am, &c, Sam Mammon.
