The German Emperor consents to the wedding between the Duke of Connaught and Princess Louisa being celebrated in England.
Ministers will shortly ask Parliament for a marriage portion of £10,0C3 a year in addition to the £1500 which the Duke already draws from the State.
The Duchess of Ed'aburgh will spend some months at Coburg, and will not visit St. Petersburg at prerent.
The University College and Hospital gain between them £50,000 by the bequest of Sir Francis Goldsmid, who; was treasurer to these institutions. Cleopatra's Needle has been moved from Westminster to the Adelphi Pier, and preparations are being made for landing and erecting it ou the embankment. Dr Hooker retires from the presidency oftheEoyal Society, and wiH probably be succeeded by Mr W. Spottiswood. Sir C. An influential deputat;oa has had ."i interview with the Home Secretary to present a petition, signed by many thousands of persons, praying that all public houses may by legislation be closed on Sunday. The Home Secretary, while sympathising with the object, said he could not introduce such a bill.
Admiral Hornby is to be created a K.CB. r Earl Drfibrin has accepted the presidency of the Royal Geographical Society.
The Princess of Wales was present at a grand concert given at St. James' Hall for the benefit of Signor Mario. The whole of the artistes gave their services gratis, and Mr Sims Eeeves, who was too unwell to be present, sent £100. The hall was crowded, r \d about £15C0 were realised.
The Treasury is prosecuting a London chemist for having sold extensively violet powder in which arsenic was the principal ingredient, and by the use of which the lives of several children were sacrificed./
The interment of Earl RusseH took took place last Thursday in the family mausoleum attached to the parish church at Chennis, Buckinghamshire. The Government offered the honor of a public funeral at Westminister, but the Earl's testamentary instructions did not allow this arrangement.
Jas. Duff Henderson,,of Canada, has started to walk a distance equal to the earth's .circumference. He proposes to cover 40 miles each secular day for two years, travelling in Africa, Great Britain and on the Continent. He is to" receive 10,000 dollars if successful.
The visit of the Parsee Cricketers to England has been postponed till next yerr. __ '
