THE QUALITY OF ROAD METAL,

(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.)

Sib,—Would you permit us to correct an error made by Mr McGowan, as reported in last night's Stab, which might i do us harm if not corrected. Mr McGowan says he has tested our road metal stone, and found it to be an inferior article. He has not tested it, for this is the first lot of stones that has been got and offered for sale from this new quarry. Mr McGowan mak6s a positive statement that the beach stories are the best, and oars are inferior. We think _it would have been more modest of him if he had only given it as his opinion. Because he is a member of the Borough Council, and , knows how to mix tea so well, it does not follow that he knows all about stone and every other thing. We have been among stones all our lives, and taken a great deal of notice of stones, and without presumption we profess to know a stone when we see it, and we do not fear the result if this stone of ours has a fair trial.. Any one that will take the pains to examine the beach stone will find half-a-dozen different of stone that come for road metal, and are from so many different rocks. Because a stone happens to get rolled on to tho beach that does not insure it to be a good stone.-—We are, &c, Habt & Hobn. July 20th, 1878.
