Thames Borough Council.

Tlio usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held at the Borough Council Chambers last evening. . Present—The Mayor, Crs Uenshaw, Butt, Gibbons, Kead, MeGowan, and Price. APOLOGIES. • Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Crs Sowe and Khrenfried.. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read aucl confirmed. SEBASTOPOL HOUSE. The Town Clerk was instructed to require the owner of the building known as Sebaslopol to remove the verandah in front o! the same. APPLICATION FOB LICENSE. An application from Mr Addey for a license for his schoolroom for meetiugs etc., was referred to the Foreman of Works. BOAD METAL. A letter was read from James Gold, of Hapo Creek quarry, offering to supply the Council with, spawls for the road metal. A letter was also read from Mevssrs Hart and Horn offering to supply broken road metal to the Council at the usual price. Cr McGowan said he had made tests of ••the two kinds of stone —beach stone and stone from the quarry, and he was satisfied that there was no comparison between the two: the beach stone was by far the hardest and best for road making. He did not? see the advisability of using public money to purchase inferior stone when the better article could be got for the same prise. . After some discussion Cr Renshaw moved that the matter be referred to the Works Committee with power to purchase 50 yards of each kind, if they see fit. Carried.

MACKAT STREET EAST FOOTPATH. A lel/ier was read from the residents of Mackay street east, between Willoughby and Richmond streets, asking that the footpath and water table be made, the writers guaranteeing one-third of the cost. Or Renshaw moved that the application be referred to the Works Committee to see if it was a suitable case to put the compulsory by-law into force, and to report to Council, lie said that at both ends of this section of the street it was uninhabited, and the owners of the uninhabited portions did not want the footpath made. The motion was seconded by Cr Read, and carried.

DE HECTOR'S VISIT. The letter from the Government re Dr Hector's visit, to report of '.Thames reefs, was read and confirmed. " RECBEATION GROUND. The Town Clerk reported that the recreation ground had been paid for. In answer to Or Read the Town Clerk said they had no plan of the piece they had bought. ' . >-,: Cr McGowan said he was not satisned that they had bought ihe piece they had bargained for. He blamed the committee in whose hands the matter had been left. After some discussion, Cr Bead moved that a tracing of the plan in the Land Transfer Office be procured and laid before the Council at the next ordinary meeting. This was seconded by Cr Price, and cariied. MACEAY STREET. A letter was read from Thomas Green, complaining of the bad state of Mackay street in front of his residence. /Referred to Works Committee with power to act; TAEABU TRACE. A letter was received from William More, complaining of Mr Steedman cutting a drain across a road made by him and others some^ time ago up Tararu Creek. Referred to the Town Clerk and Foreman of Works. DAVY STJBEET A letter was received from'Mr Richard May, stating that he had received a notice from the Town Clerk to move his house off Davy street. The writer had erected his house on it before the street was dedicated,' but he would move his house if the Council would pay him £10. After some discussion the matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Clerk; MO AN ATAIBI _ CHEEKS. A letter was read from 40 residents of Moanatairi Creek complaining of the want of a footpath up the creek, and asking that a footpath be made. Referred to Works Committee.

AN OFFER. ■'- . A letter was read from Mr E. H. Power stating that as he intended to be in Wellington this session, he offered his services to the. Council to transact any business that might be intrusted to him, It was resolved that the Council receive Mr B. .11. Power's with thanks.

WORKS COMMITTEE'S BEPOBT.

The report of the Works Committee was read as follows :-Yo lr Committee have the honor to report that, after visiting that part of Pollen street complained of by Mr Syn?s and Mr Head, they recommend that two planks be laid down, so as to give Mr Syms an entrance from the road to his house, and that_the footpath be continued from the bottom of Upper Albert street for about the distance of 60 or 70 feet. The Committee also recommend that a footway and steps be cut up Keddell street, and the Bella street footpath continued from Bead s store to the Waio-Karaka road. This will meet the requirements of the residents in Block sa. The Committee have directed the Foreman of Works to report on the best position and cost of a footway up the Karaka tra'uiway road, and of metalling the track from Karaka tolrishtown. Also, they recommend that the Holes m the roadway of Davy street be filled in with sand, and the house on the road and the fences projecting over part of the footpath removed by. the owners, lhe Foreman ®f Works has since reported to your Committee that he advised that the footpath be constructed around the horseshoe, and continued along that side of the tramway in the Karaka Creek road from Bella street to the Borough boundary; that the cost including one ; foot-bridge, would be £20; and that instead of metalling the present sledge track to Irishtown from the Karaka Creek road, which would cost £65, a foot track three feet wide be made at the side of the present sledge track, at a cost of £17 ; and also, that a footpath with steps be made up Keddell street, at a cost of £9.—Jas. McGowan." The report was adopted, the various suggestions contained therein being adopted.

The Mayor, who was suffering from rheumatism, then withdrew, and Cr Renshaw was voted to the chair. FINANCE. A number of accounts were passed for payment. TEJSDEUS FOB ALBERT BTKEET FOOTPATH. Tenders for the construction of the Upper-Albert street footpath were opened, and that of Williams aud Kelly, £35— was accepted after considerable discussion, several Councillors thinking the sum too great to be sf enfc in that locality. THE BATE. Cr Kenshaw moved that the rate for the i ensuing year be Is in the £. Carried. APPROACHES TO TABAETT BBIDGI. Tenders for the filling in of approaches to Tararu bridge were opened from Messrs McDermolt £64 and Hold £60 17s lOd. McDermott's tender was accepted, Gold not having accompauicd his tender with a sufficient deposit. ASP2ALT FOOTPATHS. Cr fienshaw re the asphalt footpaths, 'suggested that as there was no immediate necessity for hurry, and as there was a small attendance, it would be advisable to postpone this matter till next meeting. This was agreed to. PJiOPOOED FISH MABKET. Cr Gibbons referred to this matter and thought, that the Borough ought to join with the Harbor Board in the furtherance of the scheme. Crs McGowan, Gibbons and the Mayor were appointed a committee to draw uq^ft. report on this matter. • . ) -/l WOBK. In answer to Cr Gibbons, the Town Clerk said that not only ratepayers but all Borough residents were eligible for employment in Borough works. , This was all the business.
