WANGANUI.

« Monday. The three-masted schooner Ellerton, of Auckland, was signalled yesterday out* side the Heads lying safeJy at anchor. During the night the anchors must have dragged, for this morning she was discovered amongst the: breakers riding heavily at anchor on the surf, .half way down south of the spit, in a dangerous "position. The wind having moderated, there is a better chance, of • getting, her off. The schooner-rjroife^y Qusen is in a very dangerous position above the bridge. The wind failed her in passing through this morning, and a strong freshet carried her-against the piles, heeling her over to> such an extent as to threaten to capsize her. The foremast was-just cut away to save the bridge, and. she is in a very dangerous positiohCunaiirte to- discharge on the bridge and lighten, as her cargo is too heavy. '

This day. Yesterday afternoon about five *6 ■clock the Elterton went ashore. During the day there was a fresh in the river, which rose, to such: an extent as rendered it impossible to, send assistance, her anchors still dragging. During the afternoon the vessel was getting worse in the break. At four o'clock the captain slipped the anchors and tried to make sail, the wind blowing off. the shore. The surf, however, drove her back broadside to the shore. The Clyde went down, but could do nothing. Soon after a heavy sea struck the schooner, which caused her to slew bow on. When the men found she had beached, they took a boat and came off. The owner, Boss, and ihe captain remained on board all night. At midnight the vessel beached high, up the spit. No serious damage.. Insured for a thousand pounds; no insurance on the cargo.
