This day.

A warraut wa3 issued to-day for the arrest of A. G. Howrrd, Sheep Inspector, charged with a violent assault on Mr Woolfield, Inspector of Slaughter-houses. The latter alleges that Howard drove last night in a cab to the Thistle Hotel, walked in where Woolfield was standing at the inner bar, and struck him two violent blows with a riding whip, one of which laid his hat open,apf! the other made a severe cut over the eye. He alleges that Howard then walked out. The schooner Merlin, v^hich arrived at the Eaipara from Waitara, reports that while crossing the Waitara bar a heavy sea washed two seamen, John Murphy and W. F. Dean, ov>?board. The bar was so heavy at the time that no attempt could be made to rescue them.
