Arrangements have been made between the Government and the Corporation by which the Governmeat agree to sell the Thorndon reclamation land to the city upon payment of eighty-nine thousand pounds. This sum is to be payment in full of all charges. The Government, moreover, promise to introduce a bill into Parliament to enable, the Corporation to carry out the purchase. The extant of the street frontage in the reclaimed land is 7,620 feet. Captain Holmwoocl, of the Hyderabad and members of the Underwriters' Association, conferred 10-day as to the advisability of attempting to get the ship off> and it was decided to make an effort, which it is thought may be successful, provided no unfavourable change in the weather take 3 place. Light, was brought up for sentence this morning: The prisoner made a long statement, which lasted about an hour and a half, with a view of showing he could not be guilty, and called several witnesses to testify to his good character, including Superintendent Sherman. The prisoner several times called Heaven to witness that he was innocent of the crime he was found guilty of. The Chief Justice, after a few brief remarks, sentenced O'Connor to ten years' penal servitude. A supplement to the New Zealand Gazette issued to-day announces that the school-house, Paterangi, is appointed an additional polling place for the electoral district of Waip-. Mr Burns' resignation for Roslyn is Gazettrd.
