DUNEDIN.
Thursday. The Taieri nomination took place to day. Mr Donald geid, late M.H.8., seconded the nomination of W. H. Cutten. Mr Eeid said it had been his good fortune to know Mr Cutten for 30 years, and his still greater gooa fortune to have been associated with him in the conduct of Provincial affairs. At the present time the electors wanted a man of ability, who could see through sophistry. William Stow, and William Barron were also nominated. All announced themselves supporters of the present Ministry. .
At Moa Flat a man named Dennis Spellacy is supposed to have committed suicide. His clothes, with some money in the pockets, were found on the bank of. the river Molyneux. He had been drinking heavily. The Star states that Mr Burns, the member for Koslyn, will place his resignation in the hands of the Speaker upon his arrival at Wellington. The Attorney-General addresses nis constituents on Tuesday evening next. Mr Vincent Pyke has addressed his constituents at Ophir. He said he was a supporter of the present Government; and would be as long as they acted for the good of the colony, but no longer. He strongly deprecated the action of Sir George Grey in endeavoring to get the. Governor to veto the Land Bill, and also stated that he would support Mr Ballance's scheme of residential suffrage. As to taxation, he agreed with the Ministry re taking the duty off the common necessaries of life. At the conclusion of his speech he received a unanimous rote of thanks and confidence. +
This day. On the cases, Macassey v. Reed and Reed v. Macassey, being called this morning, the Attorney-General said" that he appeared, not as counsel but .as friend of both parties, and had to state that through the intervention of friends it had been agreed to withdraw both informations. He asked therefore that they should be withdrawn, which was done accordingly. The Evening Age has been served with a writ for £5000 damages, at the instance of a money lender named Benjamin, in consequence of remarks made by that paper on a case recently before the Court.
