WELLINGTON.
Thursday. The Supreme Court was occupied all day over the case of William O'Connor, indicted on three counts,, charging, him with attempting to administer strychnine to William Light. He was found guilty*, and will be sentenced to-morrow morning.—Patrick Conroy, for cutting and wounding, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labor. : A telegram from Otaki 'states that the Hydrabad has been driven farther ashore, and is almost dry at low water, and not more than ten feet at high water. It is now thought it will be impossible to get her off. It has been decided to telegraph to the South Australian Government to know whether they will be willing to receive the railway rolling stock, if got out safely, instead of the insurance money. i The Cabinet met Mr Burns, the Post-master-General, to-day, and had a long interview. They considered various proposals respecting postal and telegraph business, and finally resolved to refer the questions to Mr Burns and Mr Fisher (the Postmaster-General for New Zealand) to report, when the Cabinet will decide. It is rumoured that the Government are inclined to join the duplication arrangement agreed to by the Melbourne Conference. -The Orient steamer. Garonne arrived in London prior to the 2nd instant. The steamahip Lusitania Jeft for Australia on July the Ist. This day. In the Supreme Court, on Willian O'Connor being brought up this morning for sentence for attempt to murder by administrating poison, he asked the judge to remand the sentence for a short time, to enable him to call witnesses as to character, namely, Mr Sherman, Commissioner of Police, whom he had known for 21 years, also Messrs Fox and Lawson. The judge then postponed sentence till Monday, when prisoner said-:. "1. will then state full particulars of this affair before this Court and^your Honor, and then it will be .Been who is the guilty party."
