RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY. (Before W. Fraser, Esq., R.M.) DBUNKENNESS. " Colonel " Eichard Davis alias Shanghae, an American darkey, was charged with having been drunk and disorderly in Pollen street, Shortland, last night.
Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr , Bullen said defendant had been very disorderly, and had almost got up a fight amongst some natives. Defendant: Your Worship if you'll let me off this time, I'll promise not to get drunk till next 4th of July. It was the "gal—orious" 4th yesterday, your Worship. His Worship: In the face of what Mr Bullen says I cannot let you off, Davis. You will be fined 20s and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. Tira, a Native, was also charged with this offence. Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr Bullen said that this was the Native that caused the disturbance at Shortland the other night, when the Natives had attempted his rescue. Fined 20s and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. Defendant said he had only " tekau herine'' (ten shillings).
