I yefendnnt pleaded not guilty. John E. Dodd, sworn, deposed—l was in the Sboriland Hotel last night. " Tb'ere was a large-crowd there, and I noticed defendant amongst the crowd. I was standing near the counter, end I suddenly found a hnnd in my left-hand cout pockeL." I wheeled round and caught the defendant's h nd, and as I did so I saw the baodkerchief p_ss out of ray pocket, and a native g'rl :a lan ay with it. I accused him of the theft, and he only abused me and thre-te led me. '
By defendant —I seized you by the wrist ationte. You were partially drunk. I em crrta'n it was your band that was in my pocket. At the s:me i: me I saw a girl dart out of the hotel. Defendant then.abased Mr Dodd. His Worship cha;acleiis»d the larceny as a most impudent theft, and sentenced tbedefendant to one month's imprisonment with hprd labor, without the option ofa fine. . Court adjouraed.
