A MODERN DUEL.

The continent of Europe is in a highly irritable state at present,.and not only nations but individuals appear ready at a moment's notice to drown their differences in blood. At Prague, for instance, sa most unpleasant incident, caloaifflTing in a duel, has just occurred has created much excitement. It seems that at a merrymaking the other day where there was much joviality Count Rum* merskirch had a stcol pulled from under him, and suffered a fall of an un* romantic nature in the presence of ladies. The Count, under these circumstances, felt it imperative on him to heal his wounded honour by fighting a duel with somebody. He therefore challenged Count Max Thun, who, it is to be presumed, had either himself pulled the stool from - beneath f^Oount Rummerskirch or had connived at the unjustifiable proceeding. However this may have been, the two Counts met v in mortal combat, the result of the en* counter being that Count Max Thun was wounded in the head, and Count Rum* merskirch lost one of his fingers. The duel having been conducted in strict accordance with the laws of honor, which rendered it necessary that Count Bum* merskirch should receive some satisfaction, it would-be unjust to blame him for the affair, out it is difficult to understand how the loss of one finger can sufficiently com- •* pensate him for having the stool on which he was sitting suddenly removed from beneath him while engaged in conversa* tion with ladies.
