OAMARU.
Tuesday. While uncoupling empty trucks this morning at the Elderslie siding, on the Waireke railway, James Baird, guard of a train, bad his right leg frightfully mangled. He was brought to the hospital here, when amputation was found necessary a few inches below the hip
joint. It is doubtful if he will recover. He is 50 years of age, married, and has a large family.
