WHO IS SEYMOUR THORNE GEORGE?

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—The le der in jour contemporary of Saturday last, asjcing who Seymour Thome George is, who has dared to come forward to represent the constituency of Hokitika in the General Assembly, was so startling that I at first thought he could be nothing short of an escaped ronvict or lunatic; not that I could see, even then, that it mattered to us, at the Thames, who he was, if the people of Hokitika chose to elect him. Is ib that in depressed time 3wo have nothing else to do than find fault with one another? as "Puck " in this morning's issue complains of the magistrates, the police, the JBorough Council; in fact, he seems outotsorts with the world at large. But to return to Seymour Thorne George, are fho Hokitika e.cctors so grossly ignoran'. as to. require the intellect of the Thames to direct them in matters politic? I can imagine how delighted the electors of Hokitika will be to see the interest we take in their proceedings, and how astonished at the same time at the virtuous indignation ezpresied in the Advertiser leader at the bare supposition of their daring to return as their representative , the nephew of the uncle we, ourselves, so ; unanimously elected. Who is Seymour Thorne George ? For the enlightenment of the clique who wrote that leader I reply : He is an educated English gentleman, possessing the same rights and privileges as the rest of us; a man far above the

dictation of those third-class legislators who infest New Zealand. If this is. not satisfaclory, ask him yourselves who he is, and I fancy he will find the answer much less difficult than he would who put the question.—l am, &c,

Citizen.
