"VIATOR" AND THE STREETS OF GRAHAMSTOWN.
(To the Editor of the EVENING SIAB.)
Sib, —Has your correspondent "Viator" ever spent a winter, before on the Thames • And if so, did he ever tee the. the streets better during the rainy season than they are at present ? I testify they never were, but • thousands limes worse, and every winter Hare improved since Hunt found his famous reef, and Pollen street footpath but a quagmire; and yet there is room For improvement; and a long waj behind the streets of Christeaurch upon which "Viator" was accustomed to taking his meals. lam glad we have " intelligent men" in the country to make dean - reads to avoid the necessity of "Viator" going to Ohristohuroh to get a cleanplace to take his dinner. I regret "Viator " did not contest the election with Mr Bowe. lam sure he would have succeeded; and, oh! then would he ; ■ not have wielded the i " witch's brcom" with skill, and cleared the Boveugh Chambers'of the non-intelligent Councillors, from, the Mayor down ; and the : bungling officials, from the office boy up to i the Town Olerk, all with the solitary exception j of the Foreman of Works, who alone "knows | how to do his work." " Such a consummation | is devoutly to be wished," —the happy Mil*.. I lenniuiim, when we can squat on the piddle of j Albert street opposite your office, with " Via* ' tor " and the Foreman and enjoy a square meal without even a table cloth.- In conclusion let me add my testimony to the ability of the official above-named: he is indefatigable in his exertions to. please his employers; bis skill in laying out culverts and drains is beyond conception, in fact, his light is hid under a bushel, while his hands remain tied by the Works Committee j and withal he it so " 'umble."—l am, Ac., , Uriah Hkap.
