Wht do the public patronise the Old Established Watchmaker, and. Jeweller of Sbortland ?—,Because he ever keeps the Largest and Best Assorted Stock of Watches, Clocks, and Jewellery; also has all articles marked in plain figures ; and in cleaning and repairing Watches; Clocks, or Jewellery, his characteristics are—Despatch and Moderate Charges. Therefore note the address—M. J. Chronometer House, Shortland, Established 1867.—[Advi.] , (For remainder of News see Fourth Page.) Miscellaneous CHEAP BACON ! !! GEO. DALZIEL wishes to inform the Thames Public that he has just Purchased a SPLENDID LOT of rC\ DAIRY-FED BACON PIGS, And in order to give Miners and others an opportunity of bavin* REAL HOMECURED BACON,' he has determined to sell same Very Cheap, viz., , Fourpence half-penny per lb. This is a chance that rarely occurs, and should be taken advantage of. George Dalziel, MARY STREET, SHORTLAND. 2706 [advbbtisemeni.] MEDICAL, OFFICERS OF FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) SIR,— In you issue of this date appears a letter signed ".A Member of a Friendly Society," intended, no donbt, to injure Dr Gilbert from earning bis bread by his legitimate profession, the writer or the originator of the letter in quostion being in my opinion no less a personage than M. H. Payne. The clause quoted in no way applies 'to Friendly Societies. Perhaps M.H.P. is not aware that the general law? of A. O. F. recognise any ' medical men wipse name is on the Imperial Register, and that there is nothing in the Medical Practitioners Act, 1869, which prerents anyone in Dr Gilbert's position from practising his profession, and how could he do that without signing certificates ? M.H.P. may not be aware that even he cannot recover a penny salary from Friendly Societies on the Thames in.a court of law, they not being registered under the Friendly Societies Act in N.Z., although the parent society is duly registered under an Act of the Imperial Parliament of Great Britain; and so is' Dr Gilbert, and what is Btill more, Dr G. is some 8 or 10 years senior to <M.H.P. in the profession. In conclusion I would recommend that if M.H.P. has any more little tricks to pay, that he should throw down the gauntlet to Dr G. in a manly manner, if there is any manliness in him, which I very much doubt j self! his dear self! being his predomincnt characteristic so far as I have known him. I suppose he having failed to coerce the police into prosecuting Dr G., he intends to leave no stone unturned to secure the Societies to himself, and to pocket money from persons who would not allow him to attend them professionally. lam sure that I will never allow him to attend any member of my family, at least, until he learns to conduct and express himself as a gentleman ought to do.:—l am, Ac, W. Piant. . Thames, June 21,1878. P.S.—Sincei writing the above I hare seen further evideace as to the truthfulness of my remarks as applied to M.H.P., which, if M.H.P. had half a grain of ssnse, he would know that his acl ion in this matter would only serre to stimulate members of Friendly ■■ Societies to do justice to Dr Gilbert, which. I have no doubt they will do. M.H.P. should remember that the public will never allow their fellow man to be sat upon by anyone only wtuated by selfish motives. 2707
