Friday. Mr Olirer addressed a large meeting of electors last night. If elected he said he would jjire the Ministry general support, ai their policy commended itself to his understanding and sympathy. He wo«ld not promise to gire them or any Ministry ft thorough or unhesitating support, as to do so would be unworthy of himself and that great constituency. A rote of confidence was passed. The sale of the Albion Brewery Company's property to-day realised £18,000, which will be increased to £25,009 when the remaining sections are sold. , One of the men employed on the wreck of the Ann Gambles, named East, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for stealing some cargo. More than one explosion by kerosene has occurred in Dunedin very recently. The body of a man named E. Stevenson has been found in a creek at Half-way bush. The deceased, an elderly man, left Banbury's Hotel at 8 o'clock on Monday evev: lg, end proceeded homewards. He
was slightly under the influence of liquor, and, as he had to cross a creek, it was presumed that he had tumbled in and been drowned.
In a case in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, in which, a hotel-keeper named J. Hams sued a person named Jackson on an lOU for board x and lodging, the defendant stated that during three months he drew from the P.O. Savings Bank £217, which, with the exception of £50 he spent in drink, mainly at the plaintiff's house. Counsel for defendant characterised the case as one of the most impudent " lambing down " cases he had ever heard of. The magistrate gave judgment against the plaintiff, and stated that his impression was that a publican who knowingly detained a man in bis house while he was in an unfit state to take care of his money was liable to punishment, and he hoped the Licensing Bench would make an example of the publican in question. The fire at Arrowtown last night destroyed the Commercial and Shamrock Hotels. Mr Jenkins' store was also much damaged. A 11, the places were partially insured. There was no wind, or half the town would have gone. The New Zealand office loses £350, South British £350, and Norwich £300.
