Wednesday.
A large and influential meeting was held last evening to urge the Government to complete the Orepuhe and Otautau railway. There is an immense amount of money lying idle through the non-comple-tion of these lines, which were commenced four years ago under the Otago Provincial Government, but the works on which have been discontinued for over two years. Resolutions requesting the Government to complete their construction were unanimously carried, and a permanent Railway Committee was appointed to see the work carried on.
' Great interest is manifested in the resuit of a discovery t expectcd to be made when the prospectc :s of Longwood boitom this week. Work is now vigorously proceeding in a large number of claims, and a private company has been formed to procure a crushing battery.
