Theatre Royal.

A dramatization of Wilkie Collins' "novel, ''■' The ."New- Magdalen," was produced at the Theatre Royal last night. It is an emotional and sensational, piece, and the plot and incidents of the book are very cohtsoctedly given.' The arduous part of Mercy Merrick was ably sustained by Miss Annie Firmin, while Mrs Walter Hill * did equal justice to he role of Grace Koseberry. Mr John Jack's Lucian Grey, the ; model was an excellent representation of a difficult character. ; Mr J. B. Stcele must also be commended for his conception and pour.traya.l of the character ot Horace Holmcroft. Mr Musgrave, as a German doctor, though appearing only in the first act, played naturally a part which would have tempted some actors to overdo the eccentricities of speech incidental to the role. Mr Emmet, described as "an imbecile attendant," deserves credit for his impersonation, and the same may be said of Miss Jessie Raymond for her rendition of the character of - Lady Janet Floy. ; The other characters were of secondary importance, Miss Firmin sang "Down by "the river side," and displayed the possession of a sweet, pleasant voice, used with judgment and taste. The piece- was very well mounted, and the several tableaux were much applauded; At the conclusion, Mr Jack'and Miss Firmin received "& call. To-night " Driven from Home," will; be produced, after which Miss Annie Firhiin will exhibit her talented versatility in a laughable" Protean " farce.
