lablications A BOOK OF GUSAT VALUE, II 1 is wi h pleasure that we announce that a book of great importance is being offered ' to the poaplc of the Thames, entitled^'The History of the Sea," giving ii a condensed form tfao important; facts of more'than a hundred separate works. It is, in fact, ad ency-' clopedia of travel, history, description, and adventure, the records' and/ resrlts of several voyages. Those made by.Columbus, Cook,j Kane, and Hall, are but samples -of the hundreds thoroughly treated. Every.c'.imate and land, with its products— very people, with their religious superstitions pid character,, are rev lew* d in, the work scientifically. It also d scribes the distribution of rajn'el!, ocean currents, with their influence on cHmate and life ; r id one of its principal features is ■ the great progress of navigation, trade end commerce of each country, skip-building, ■ dredging* and deep sea sounding. The whole is embellished with nearly 300 engravings, ; taken by *rtisU in the regions to which theyrelate. The work id thoroughly indexed and arrang- d;~SO"aB to make it a complete book of reference.. The »p<ckl ge>up ot this volume' constitutes it a most suitable book for"pfts"en(ation or prize purposes. All should avail themselves of *he f st oppo-lun'ly of securing a copy. _ • ' ' The follovlngtestimor'-'s have ben givejn,:—Bebop's Coi>rt, Auckland, March'ls,lß7B. 1 ' Bishop Oowie begs to thank Mr Lyon for a copy of the "History of the Sea," published by Messrs J. W., Lyon and Coi" %he Bishop ' has not been able, to, do more' the l glance . through the volume, which seem? to be fu" of information". • The bmding, type and paper of the book .- c certainly good. % . I have pleesr^e in bearing testimony to the high estimation in which Messrs Lyon and Co. —enterprising tooksellers and publishers i\ Canada— are held. Many names of dist'ac»lion in our own Presbyterian Church, including Princip \ Caven, of Knox Co'lege, Toronto;, and. .Dr Topp, of,.Knox Church, Toronto j as well as distinguished representatives of other denomination?, could be adduced as having lent tbeir influence to the. firm. I have been desired by the Bgenfc in New Zealand," who has come from Canada in the interests of the firm, to examine and.re view the work entitled "The History of the Sea," issued by Messrs Lyon and Co.' As the ocean has for me very strong attractions, this predilection may to some extent tincture my esti-. mation of • the work now submitted to.- the public. But I would heartily recommend the, >ook to all lovers of litoiature, as one embracing most graphic and interesting accounts of- sufferings, dangers, adventures, and discoveries, in connection with the deep 1;. and these extending over the sweeping, interval which exists between the deluge and th* modern Atlantio ; ci.ble. I think I can predict for the volume, on the part of Auckland, if not the colony at larje, a ready and extensivepopularity, on the ground of its'dealing descriptively, exhaustively, and aifcisticilly, with "all that is grand, wild, changeful, perilous, or romantic in the history of that, mysterious element by which thpy are srrrounded. ALEXANDER CABBICZi Minister of St. i idrew'a Auckland. The " History of the Sea," by Dr Goodrioh, is the most complete and comprehensive work on the subject which has «ver come under my notice, being a vast treasure of dreply "interesting knowledge. It is beautifully bound, and elaborately illustrated. As a presentation volume, t) *9 artistic book is most s< 'table and valuable. < WIU.IAM KIHK, Ex-President of the Wesleyan Conference, New Zealand. I have crrefully examined Dr F. B. Goodrich's " History ot the Sea," issued by the enterprising Canadian and Australian publishing firm, J. W, Lyon and Co. The title page shows it to be ft work of large promise; it is, however, only fair to say the promise is more than fulfilled. All wbo wish for a comprehensive knowledge of the great •• world of waters," its strange inhabitants, and the stirring events'which have taken place upon it, should read this book. ..Dr Goodrioh's style is tbafc. of a master of his subject, and no ©no will read his pages without thanking him for many a pleasant and profitable' hour. The. illustrations aro of great value, and the general get up of the book is very creditable o the firm that has sent it out. Bey. D. DtJiiX>N, F.R.A.S., . . _ Auckland. I have bfen asked to express an opinion with regard to a work entitled "The History of-the Sea." The copy before me is a. well printed and elegantly bound volume, illustrated by,a number df excellent engravings. The publishers- (Messrs Lyon and C 0.., of Guelph, Ontario) desorve much credit for the production of such a work. If they r-e in a position to supply books of this character through a New Zealand agency, at a moderate coßt, I conceive that they may be able to do a goed, work. " The History of the Sea" '3 a very readable book, full of interesting and instruct ivo pabbages, and abounding is Btirring and thrilling incidents. The true stories which* it'contains will be found in many instances to be " stranger tlu-n fiction," while it is entirely superior in character to the sensational literature, which is so widely dissera-. mated, and is, -apparently, so eagorly sought after' and devoured. Cnxs. M. NsifOK, M.A., . ■ ••-. •' . Incumbent St. Paul's. I have examined the work called " The History of the Sea," published by J. W. Lyon and Co, and have found it all that the title page declares it to be:" A graphic description of maritime adventu.e, achievements, exploration, discoveries,' and inventions." It is a very interesting work, containing a great amount of historical and scientific? information, given in such a way as to render the volume highly attractive and useful, especially to the young. ■ Tho book is got up in a handsome and durable style, und wi I form a valuable addition to the family library. R. F. Macnicoi, Minister St. James' Presbyterian Church Auckland. "The Histo.y of the Sea," by Goodrich' and Howland is; both in its plans aud execution, very superior to those by Kingston and Ballantine. It is romantic in its narratives, and y.et truthful in its details. I know of no book of the character that I would more readily put into the hands of young people. B. MAUSSM.X, Archdeacon of Auckland. I have much pleasure iv adding my testimony, along with many others, to the value of Dr Goodrioh's work, "The History of the Sea." The clearness and purity of style, the interesting and vivid descriptions of the wonders of the deep, the artistic finish and beauty of the numerous engravings, the excellence of the paper and topography, make this one of the most enjoyable books. Geouge B. Mitnro, Minister of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Bemuora. " The History of the Sea," by Frank B. Goodrich, L.L.D., is a work which will be perused with advantage by all, and especially by the young. The facts it deals with are fairly statod, and placed before the reader in graphic language. It may b« pre-eminently described as a "Book for the Family," and as deserving of commendation lo aU who have
