Sib,—lt is to be regretted a matter co essentially local, and affecting the interests of property as merging the Parawai district into the Borough should hare been seized upon by Mr Bead as having a political significance; and thus he considered it advisable to threaten Mr Allom with all sorts of pains and penalties if be persisted in exercising those simple rights of citizenship, which cannot in.any way concern his relations with the Government as a civil servant. Local politics are at' the best detestable, but when connected

with municipal affairs they become rastly more remarkable for their pettiness and chicanery. Mr Bead's letter is a capital example of this wretched fact. He admits the truth of Mr Allom's statements, burks the question at issue, changes his mode of attack, reviles his opponent for using a common right of way of which he himself is not slow to take advantage, and asks a question which is not pertinent to the subject in] dispute. Mr Read should be advised.
