COLLECTING A DEBT.
" A new way to recover old debts " has been exemplified in Christchui oh. A Mr Peiper there had a debtor from whom he sorely wanted payment of an account due. Me followed him to Lyttelton. fearing his harried departure for " fresh fields and p'rstures new." He found him in the British Hotel, and in a private room of the hostelry debtor, and creditor faced the difficulty and one another. Peiper demanded his money, but didn't get it at once, so he " went for " the un-! happy debtor, and gave him a terrible • punching ' a la' Jem Mace.' While the "punching" process was going on the debtor's wife appeared upon the scene, and, in order to stop the punishment, paid the' money. Then the . creditor "shouted" drinks for his late foe and spouse, and all was peaceful. But two days later the victorious Peiper' waa pulled up for. assuming his debtor, and has to pay a fine cost of £3 ss. 4d. That, however, .amounted to only a small per centage onxthe almost bad debt which he> had >ecovered, and besides he had the pleasure of " taking it out" of his debtor, in the shape of thrashing him. No doubt the debtor thought this a rateer expensive way to pay the peiper. — Taranaki Herald, '
