Dr Macartney, who has had a chequered career as a elergyman, barrister, Fiji planter, a legislator, and a temperance lecturer, died by poison on Sunday, thus creating a vacancy for the representation of South Gippsland. An analysis of his. stomach is to be made before an inquest; can be held.
The Melbourne Cup entries number 108, fewer than last year, but the quality is better. It is worthy of notice that only one aged horse is in the list. Mr L. Oats are scarce and wanted. Waiting late advices from Mauritius, sugars have advanced from 10s to 16s per ton for whites.
