OUR WATER SUPPLY.

(To the Editor of tha Evening Star.) Sib,—When taking a quiet walk down Burke street wharf yesterday, I noticed that the steamer Tongariro was getting her boilers supplied with water from the pipes laid along the wharf, and I can safely say that for every gallon of water .that the steamer received, four gallons ran to waste, on account of so many bursted places in the rotten hose that is in use to supply the shipping with water. Now, Mr Editor, instead of the Water Committee purchasing meters to know how much water runs into the sea, it ' would be to their interest to purchase some new hose, and get all the leaks in in pipes.fixed. I would like to know what the Turncock is about when he allows so much water to run to waste at the end of the wharfand in Owen street. Lwould like some of the Water Committee just to have a look under the Waiotahi culvert that crosses Owen street, and they will see a sight that, will open their eyes. Why, there are tons of water running to waste every hour from the main pipe, and it has been in that condition this last fortnight, to my knowledge. Hoping some of the Committee will see to this,— lam, &c, Hawkshaw. Pollen street. _^J__
