In another column will be found the Governor's proclamation re the attachment of Parawai to the Borough, which will be carried out unless witiin two months of date one-third of the burgesses of Thames Borough or one-third of the resident house•holders of Parawai object to the union. We believe that a sturdy opposition may be expected, and that the objectors will be immediately in the field to'prevent the dismemberment of the County and Parawai district.

We would remind the public that on Friday evening Count de Zlaba will deliver his promised lecture on the " Language and Literature of Poland " at the Academy of Music, in aid of the funds of the Mechanics' Institute. The lecture, of itself a great intellectual treat, will be rendered additronrlly attractive by the rendition of appropriate vocal and instrumental music by members of the Choral Society. Amongst others, Mesdames Kilgour and Stonier and Mr M; H. Airey will give solos. We believe the weekly practice of S. George's Choir will be changed to some other night so as not to interfere with the lecture.

On seeing the communication received by the County Council from the Minister of Public Works, instructing the Chairman to have a District Kailways Bill drafted, to provide for the construction of the Thames Valley Railway, the Chairman of the Thames Valley Railway Committee telegraphed to the Government on the matter, and received the following reply from the Under Secretary for Public Works:—"ln reply to your telegram of this date, I am directed by the Hon. the Minister for Public Works t-> explain that there was no intention to go outside the gentlemen with whom the Government nave been in correspondence. On referring to your letter of the 13th May, the inadvertency by which the Council was communicated with is explained, your, letter having been addressed from the Council Chambers. I will wire the Chairman of the 1 County Council explaining the mistake. A formal letter will be sent to you requesting that the proposed craft bill be prepared." ■-■ .

We understand that the steamer Eiroriro, belonging to Ahi Pipsne Aperahama, and somewhat larger than Mr Firth's boat the Tui, was on Saturday taken fifteen miles above Omahu, beyond the fine Wairakau Block, and nearly up to Waiharakeke. These blocks are both valuable, the former being about 10,CC3 acres in extant, but ircluded in the Brcomhall block. Waib^rakeke contains about BCO3 acres, is one of the blocks on which the Government have advanced money, and which will be brought into the Native Lands Court this month. The Eiroriro has been able to get up the river owing to the successful snagging operations carried on by Mr Tizard for Mr J. 0. Firth. It will now be possible to run excursions up the Waihou. to enable residents to see their promised land that is now to be given to others.

The usual squad and recruit drill of the No. 2 Haurakis will take place to-night under the orderly officer of the week, Lieut. Denby. The officers of this corps have been to considerable pains to perfect thenrelves :"n the latest details of the new drill, and it is to be hoped the young members will keep up the efficiency of the c"rps by constant attendance. The bayonet exercise squad will be instructed by Lieut. Denby to-night, and the junior squad at the same time by the orderly serge; it. There are a few vacancies for grcwing lads of the reqrired standard and physique. .

Another all-comers' match takes place to-night at Mr Barlow's Bifle Gallery, the conditions being as usual—the highest score out of any six shots. The first prize on this occasion will be a meer-scL-um pipe ard v pcu-d of tobacco; the second prize half a pound of tobacco. Mr B rlow's spirit ana enterprise certainly entitle ai,m to the patronage of his brother volunteers.
