WELLINGTON.
Saturday.
Lloyd's agents here report that th) ship Craigie Lee, from London to Wellington, has put into Freemantle with the loss of topmast, sails, and bulwarks. Her cargo is much damaged, and aho will take two months to repair.
A boat race came off this afternoon, which caused considerable interest. It was between DudW's Violet and Hill's Pet, both Auckland-built boats. The course was eleven miles, twice round, and the stakes twenty pounds. Duder sailed his own boat. Violet started with about five yards lead Until off Sbmcs' Island, when she had increased it to a hundred. Coming ■ into Kaiwarra the Pet missed in going about, and this enabled the Violet to increase her lead to half a mile. By a judicious move in coming between the buoys the Violet increased the lead by about fifty yards. She ran down upon the wind with the same lead, and apaia widened the gap' between herself and her opponent when off Somes' Island. When again off Kaiwarra the Pet repeated the mistake of making too short a board, and was compelled to go about again, thereby further adding to the lead of her opponent, which came in a winner by about a mile and a quarter distance, seven minutes by time. The race commenced at 1 p.m. and finished at 4. Considerable sums of money changed hands on the, event. - The s.s. City of Sydney with the London mails.to April 25th, left San Francisco oh May 13th, contract date. The Australia, with the last outward mail, arrived at San Francisco on the 22nd instant, one day in advance of contract date. The outward San Francisco mail was dispatched by the Botorua this afternoon. It consisted of 4,458 letters, 390 book packets, 3,544 newspapers for London: 325 letters, 397 book packets, and 287 newspapers for America.
By the outgoirg mail there were 84 nominations for .assisted immigrants g.anted, about half the number received last month.
It is stated that Captain Wheel'.r will resign the command of the s.s. Hawen in favour of Captain Kennedy, who will band over the s.s. Taiarca to Captain Wheeler. The cause of the change is that the Hawea's usual route being via
the East Coast, Captuin Wheeler rarely has an opportunity of seeing home.
This day.
