The statement that General 'j'odelben has sent an ultimatum to the Porte, demanding that the Turks should evacuate' Shumla, Varna, and Batpum, and the Russians occupy Bujukdere, is semiofficially denied.
The speech of the Marquis of Hartingt>n wes moderate, being confined to the question of constitutional rights. He said the object of concealing the step from Parliament could be only to assert prerogative of the Crown.
The Attorney-Gen era' and Mr Gladstone argued the legal points. The latter protested against making a precedent of an Act violating constitutional liberties.
Mr Newdegate supported' the resolution. ,
May 22.
The total innings of the Australians closed for 39. The Australians were beaten in one innings. The batting of the Australians was weak. The top score of the Australian side was made by Mr Garrett, Midwinter carrying his bat through the innings for 14.
A four per cent. Queensland loan of one million two hundred thousand is an-
nounced.
