Tuesday. TI 3 plaintiff's solicitor in the libel action 0. E. Haughton v. Pied and Fenwick (Ofcago Daily Times) has authorised the contradiction of the report that the said acton will noi come into Court. He cays it will be tried at the next sitting, of the Supreme Court at Dunedin. ;
The house property of J. W. Jago was destroyed by fire this afte^aoon. It was insured in the Victoria, office for £450, and the furniture in the same for £150.
Mr Macandrewy under date of the 16th. of April, writes to the Danedin Chamber of Commerce assuring it of his desire to see the Northern vl'unk railway compl - ted, and adds that the Government need no spur to induce it to do its duly in the matter.
Discussion has arisen between the Education Boavd and the Dunedin School Coauiittee. The latter passed a resolution to-day maintaining that it was only rigt.t to recommend teachers for appointment in the city ichools. An accident happened to Goddard's co c, between Palmers ton and Moeraki to-.-ny, by which Mr Nicholls, of Messrs p.'gelty, Nichoils and Co., was'killed icst.sitiineoudy, and Ernest Maitland, son of J. P. Maitland, was fatally injured, and several others hurt.
.Another tele^n on^the subject received from Gf.maru says :—A fearful accident occurred tocby fo a coach from Dancdm. It left Palmerston for Moerpki at the usu^l time, having fifteen passengers on board, one cf whom was a lady. All went well till descending the ranges, when the traces of- one of the torses came loose. Goddard, a careful driver,- who has been on the road for nine years, Wfs driving, and on the box was a young man named Maitland. He tried to put his foot 01 the break to ass'sfc Goddard, but bis foot slipped, and he fell down among the horses' feet. In falling he knocked Goddard's foot off the break,, and before Goddard could get bis -foot on again the ccach got a great way pa, and one of the horses fe'l. The 0.h9T3 took fright and bolted, and dragged the coach and occupants over a sleep embankment. On being picked up Maitland was fcund to be fearfully injured, end he is not expectel to live till morning. NichoHs, of Dalgetty and Nichoi'.s, was killed outright. Gpddprd, the driver, is very seriously injured, avd five of the other passengers are ''njr.:cd, but none of tbem dargerously, Theie is £rcit excitement in town, and when a special (rain with the derd and injured reached here, tlie platfoim was crowded. In connection with this sad affair, it may be stated that this is the last day on which the coach runs, as the new line wi'l be opened to-morrow. Tfc:«day. Ii is prid tb?.t Mr A. J.
