The Eig Pump.

The Pump stopped on Monday last for the purpose of undergoing a general orerhaul, which it has gone without for several ye:.rs. The stoppage will last for several days, and it is expected that it will take a week to free the 640-feei level again when pumping id resumed. Mr Black, the manager of the works, has given warning o the managers of Iho mines adjoining rod connected with the pump, to be preuarrd for an influx of gas, which genera ly at'ends 'the stoppage of the pump, but up to this afternnon, as far as we. can learn, no gas has made Up appear*, anre. The machinery and various appurtenances of the Pump have not suffered from we r and toar as might be expected. The big cylinder, which is as sound as a drum, will nofc'r-quire touching, but in the engine room the three small high pressure engire." which regulate the pump are. being taken to pieced and cleaned, and the piston rod and valve repaired and fiticd w\h new springs, the old ones being worn out. The air pump is a 1 so undergoing extensive repairs. The three boilers are be'ng cleaned, and, at the lime of our visit, ihey were lull of boys scraping out the soot. Mr Ginn and his men are repairing the flue and executing other necessary pieces of brick work. The overhaul should add greatly to tbe efficiercy of the pump. Mr Black informs us that it is likely that the winding engine will be elened and rep ired while the water is being pumped out of the shaft. ,
