RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY. (Before A. J. Allom arid H. Goldsmith Esqs., J's.P.) . ,;: ;.. .DRUNKENNESS. ".,,.■.•. John Trace was charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct, obscenity, and assaulting a constable. . Defendant pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and not guilty to the two other charges., Constable Cleary deposed that he was on duty in Queen street last evening, and his attention was called by the defendant calling out and using indecent:'and threatening language to his wife. He used the language written on the paper. Witness then arrested him 'with the assistance of Constable Hogan, whom defendant struck with his clenched fist By defendant—The assault took place in Queen street. Constable Hogan, sworn, gave corroborative evidence. By defendant—You struck me in the face. I did not kick you*. Defendant was fined 20s, and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment for the drunkenness; 20s, and costs, or 48 hours' for using the obscene language ; and 40s, and costs, or 7 days' imprisonment for assaulting the constable. ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. A case of abusive language was on the charge sheet, but as neither party appeared the case was struck out. .'
BIDING ON THE FOOTPATH.
Isaac E. Cooper was charged with riding on the footpath in Bowen street, Alfred street-and Grey street, Parawai.
Defendant said he had ridden across the old cricket ground, and had done so repeatedly, as also had others. Mr Peat, foreman of works for th'o Parawai Highway Board, 'stated that some shells had been recenLy laid on the footpaths the defendant he'}, ridden over, and and he had been instructed by the Board to lay an information against the first person who rode across the foolp-th. The Chairman of the Bench characterised the track across the cricket ground as a hap for unwary travellers, and the property owners should erect a fence to. keep people from going across. The defendant would be fined 5s and cost.
Court adjourned.
