THE MAYOR AND BOROUGH COUNCILLORS.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—Let all independent ratepayers be reminded that, to-night, the Mayor will give an explanation of his personal dealings in the Council since his election as Mayor. Let it be understood that it is not the mere question of Mayor's expenses, but the still larger question—Shall the Mayor and Council have power to go outside the Borough, to have work done that can be done in it ? I wonder if either of the newspaper proprietors here were in the Council, whether the Mayor and Town Clerk would have had th« nerve to do what they have done? Ask Measri Renshaw, Read, McGowan and others to be on the platform to-night, and say " how sweet are the fruits of office," and at the same time let them bring a return of all moneys received by them bn Borough, account since -they have been in office; it would be very interesting, so report sayi. I hear Mr Speight, with his usaaj^gestieu* lations and threadbare, arguments, with Mr G. N. Brassey, are ? to be the two rotten supports between whom the Mayor seeks to stand or fall.—<l am, <fee,
Bcb&ess.
